Notice Period & Relieving FAQs (Global & Tech)
Common legal, buyout, and transition questions answered across tech hubs.
How is Last Working Day (LWD) calculated?
LWD is calculated by adding your contractual notice days (calendar days, including weekends) to your resignation submission date. For example, resigning on March 1st with a 30-day notice period results in an LWD of March 31st.
How do notice periods vary globally (US, UK, Europe, India)?
In the United States and Canada, most tech employment is at-will, making 2 weeks (14 days) the standard professional courtesy notice. In the UK and Germany/Europe, 1 month (30 days) to 3 months is standard by contract or statutory rules. In India and traditional IT services giants, 60 to 90 days is common.
How does Notice Period Buyout work?
A notice buyout occurs when an employee is relieved before their full notice term by paying equivalent basic salary for unserved days. Hiring companies frequently reimburse buyout costs to expedite key engineering start dates.
Can unused paid time off (PTO) shorten my notice period?
Yes, with manager approval, unused earned leaves or PTO can often be adjusted to pull forward your final working day or encashed during final settlement.
